If you are planning to conceive, it is recommended that you consult your doctor before becoming pregnant. There are several pre-pregnancy tests which are recommended for women before pregnancy. Tests include routine blood type screening as well as testing antibody levels for diseases such as Rubella, Mumps and Measles. These tests can be carried out at our after-hours clinic in Melbourne to fit with your busy work/life schedule.

Pre-Pregnancy Screening Tests

During pregnancy, women receive routine antenatal care to ensure optimum care at this important time. Ante-natal care is designed to ensure your own and your baby's health throughout the pregnancy. It also means that your doctor can identify any potential issues at the earliest possible time and work with you to manage them. Pre-pregnancy screening is an important first step in ensuring an optimum pregnancy.

Although most women are vaccinated against Rubella and frequently against Mumps and Measles, antibody levels can decrease over time. If your antibody levels are low, a booster vaccine can be given before pregnancy to protect both you and your unborn child. Some vaccines cannot be given during pregnancy, attending a pre-pregnancy clinic provides an opportunity for you to receive booster vaccinations if your antibody levels are low. Rubella, also known as German Measles is particularly harmful to unborn children if contracted in early pregnancy. For peace of mind, and a safe and healthy pregnancy it is best to have your antibody levels tested before pregnancy.

Testing for blood type is an important screening test for the prevention of haemolytic disease of the newborn. This condition is completely preventable with appropriate treatment - injections of immune globulin during and after pregnancy. Haemolytic disease of the newborn is uncommon and only occurs when a woman has Rh- blood and her partner, and child have Rh+ blood.

There is an extensive list of other tests which may be offered, depending on your circumstances and history. These include testing Vitamin D levels, checking for urinary tract infections by way of a mid-stream urine test, and generally ensuring that you and your reproductive organs are in a healthy condition. A pap-smear may be recommended. Screening for STD's is also routinely undertaken by some General Practitioners.

At our clinic, you will find General Practitioners whose area of specialisation and interest is in Women's Health. In addition to offering an after-hours clinic, you can choose to visit a female GP for screening. Please be sure to ask for one of our female doctors when phoning to make an appointment.
